Finding a Company's Competitors

D&B Hoovers

D&B Hoovers can be used to retrieve detailed company reports on a variety of companies. The "Competitors" section of these reports can be used to identify and learn about the main international competitors of a given company.

The following example illustrates a sample search for Microsoft's company profile.

Open the D&B Hoovers link below:

After D&B Hoovers opens, type the name of the company in the search box located at the upper right-hand corner of the page:

A list of suggested companies will appear in a drop-down column below the search box. You can click on one of these results to look at a specific company, or click the magnifying glass icon to retrieve the full list.

After retrieving the complete results list, click on the link of the company's name to retrieve the company report:

The company report for the selected company will appear:

In the left-hand menu, click "Competitors" (located under "Advanced"):

The Competitors list will appear:

D&B Hoovers defaults to sorting the competitors list based upon the number of employees who work at the competing companies, from low to high. Click the caret (downward-facing arrow) to sort the list by the following parameters:

  • Employees: High to Low
  • Employees: Low to High
  • Assets: High to Low
  • Assets: Low to High
  • Company Name: A to Z
  • Company Name: Z to A
  • Sales: High to Low
  • Sales: Low to High
