What Is an Endangered Species?

The National Geographic Society defines an endangered species as "a type of organism that is threatened by extinction."

Species are classified into one of seven levels of conservation, which represent different threat levels. In order of increasing severity, the levels are:

  • Least concern
  • Near threatened
  • Vulnerable
  • Endangered
  • Critically endangered
  • Extinct in the wild
  • Extinct
