Guide for History and Literature of Music III

This library guide discusses online and print resources that are useful for researching the history and literature of music.

Library Databases

EBSCOhost's America: History & Life database is a primary online tool for researching historical topics related to the U.S. and Canada.

EBSCOhost's Historical Abstracts Full Text is a primary online tool for researching historical topics outside the U.S. and Canada.

EBSCOhost's Humanities Full Text indexes scholarly resources in the humanities, including music.

JSTOR indexes full text, scholarly journals in the humanities, including music.

Gale's Literature Resource Center provides access to full-text articles from scholarly journals, critical essays, and biographies. The database covers topics and notable figures from the world of literature and music.

EBSCOhost's MLA International Bibliography is a comprehensive, international database that indexes scholarly resources on a broad range of subjects, including literature, folklore, film, dramatic arts, and music.

NAXOS Music Library is an online classical music library that offers streaming access to more than 88,000 CDs with more than 1.2 million tracks. Over 800 new CDs are added to the library each month.

Oxford Music Online serves as a gateway to Grove Music Online, Oxford Dictionary of Music, and Oxford Companion to Music.

In addition to the above databases that provide comprehensive coverage of music history and literature, the NSU Library Catalog indexes books, recordings, scores, and videos found in the NSU Library system. The NSU Library collection includes a wide range of topics dealing with music. Also, the WorldCat database is useful for identifying books that are not found in the NSU Library system. WorldCat Dissertations and Theses can be searched to find doctoral dissertations and master's theses. Books and dissertations not owned by the NSU Library can be requested free of charge from other libraries by submitting a request to the Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery Department.

If a database that you are searching retrieves the citation but not the full text of a journal article that you wish to read, the item may be available in full text on a different library database. To find out if another database provides an article in full text, search the article title using the first box on the Discovery Articles Search page. You can access this search interface from the main library page by clicking the fifth tab from the left, "E-Journals by Title," then navigating to "Journal Collections" under the search bar, and finally, clicking the "Search" tab. Below is an illustration.
