How to search for a book:

Book Search Quick Guide
Using the Library Catalog, you can search for books in various ways, such as by keyword, author or title. (Ex: book title, Catching Fire). Or, if you know the author of the book, search the Library Catalog and select the search type "author" and type the author's last name first. (Ex: Collins, Suzanne). For a sample listing of authors by genre, try the Authors by Genre page.

On the third floor, fiction books can be found in several of the Library's collections: The "F" section of the Y Collection includes young adult fiction titles, the Main Collection's " PZZ" section has mostly detective and mystery books, and the "PS" and "PR" sections offer both fiction and nonfiction books.  Also, check to see if some of our new titles may be featured on our" New Book Display" located on the first floor or other displays throughout the library.

Call numbers are important as they direct you to the correct shelf and place where the book can be found. Like most university libraries, the Main collection and many other collections throughout the JVL use the Library of Congress Classification System. Library of Congress (LC-call numbers on how materials are organized). See example book record below:

Book record

The Y Collection uses the Dewey Decimal Classification System, which is commonly used by school and public libraries. (See example below of the Dewey Decimal call number F C6958ca for the book, Catching Fire. This book is located in the JV Library's Y Collection.
