HIST 4603 - History of the New South

Resources for researching Southern politics and political leaders in the New South:

NSU Library Catalog
WorldCat (International library catalog)

E-Journals by Title

To find out if a particular journal, magazine or newspaper is covered in full text on a library database, search the title of the publication (not article title) in E-Journals by Title.

If a particular book or article is not owned by the NSU Library in print or electronic format, it can be requested free of charge through interlibrary loan.

Online Resources

America: History & Life (History journals)
American Memory (Historical documents, prints, images, etc.)
Biography & Genealogy Master Index (Biographical resource)
Chronicling America (Historic American newspapers)
Digital Library of Georgia (Newspapers)
Google Newspapers (Archive)
Historical Newspaper Collections
New York Times (ProQuest Newspapers) (1851-Present)
NewsBank (Includes many local U.S. newspapers typically going back from a few years to a few decades in time)
North Carolina Newspapers (DigitalNC project)
The Oklahoman Archives (Daily Oklahoman)
The Portal to Texas History (Includes access to the Brownsville Daily Herald)

To search for other open access newspaper files, try Googling combinations of terms such as newspaper or newspapers, archive or archives, edu, library, university, etc., along with the name of a state or newspaper. Since many online gateways to full text, archived newspapers are found through university library sites, including terms such as edu, university, or library should help to find them. Unfortunately, searching for full text newspaper databases outside the NSU Library will often return resources that require an institutional logon or password. On the other hand, the number of archived, open access newspaper databases is increasing as time passes.

Another approach to finding newspaper articles is to look at the notes and bibliography of a book or journal article on the topic. If the NSU Library does not provide access to a particular newspaper, request the article as a "photocopy" through interlibrary loan.
