The University Archives serves as the corporate memory of Northeastern State University. It is a central source for information about the people, events and buildings of NSU. Its purpose is to support the University administration, faculty, staff and student body by collecting, preserving and servicing non-current university records through the archival and records management programs. The University Archives also services research requests from external groups or individuals.
Primary collection emphasis is on official publications of the University (such as yearbooks, handbooks, catalogs, the school newspaper, programs, calendars, class schedules, newsletters, directories, etc.) Other materials created by the University in conducting business are also essential. These may include minutes of meetings (including the Board of Regents for Oklahoma Colleges, 1947-current), budget requests to the Board, reports, transcripts (Cherokee National Seminaries and Northeastern Normal School), personnel files, maps, photographs, speeches, biographical data, etc. Personal collections of individuals connected with the University are also sought. These may include such materials as manuscripts, photographs, slides, video and audio cassettes, etc. Faculty/Student materials such as scrapbooks, lecture notes, syllabi, etc. would also be welcome.
Access may be restricted by the donor(s) or originating office. The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 protects the confidentiality of such materials as transcripts, personnel records, student health files, etc.
Materials included in the University Archives are usually unique--they exist nowhere else--or are important to documenting the history of the University. Usage rules for their preservation exist in the Archives. Materials do not circulate except to the office of origin.
Photocopying is done by an Archives staff member according to the restrictions, age and physical condition of the materials. Photocopying light and heat is extremely harmful to paper. Copyright restrictions may also apply.
The University Archives is located in the east wing of the Library in Room 156. Our hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Archives is closed to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays, however, we happily accept appointments. This allows Archives staff uninterrupted time to address issues related to preservation, bibliographic control of the archival collections, and reorganization of our department.
