The following overview will help you get started with the most frequently used online resources to complete your research and to answer the type of questions that may arise in clinical settings.


Research & Clinical Databases

CINAHL Complete stands for Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature. Core research tool that contains full text of 1,400 journals and citations in more than 5,300 journals. Contains over 4.5 million records dating back to 1937 and is accredited with distinction by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Accreditation Program

ClinicalKey provides access to authoritative medical information at all levels from topic overview to evidence-based data in one search. Contains full text of over 1,000 books and 500 journals published by Elsevier in all medical specialties as well as images and videos in Procedures Consult

MEDLINE is the premier database from the National Library of Medicine. Contains journal articles from 1946 to present in medicine, nursing, health care system, and allied health care practice, education, and research. We have access to MEDLINE in Clinical Key and Ovid

PsycINFO includes over 1,800 professional journals, chapters, books, reports, theses and dissertations, published internationally. Additionally, there are more than 8 million cited references in 185,000 journal articles, books, and book chapters

Education Full Text contains full text of 350 journals in education and special education back to 1996

Science Direct is a full text scientific database produced by Elsevier. It contains journal articles from over 2,500 journals and chapters from almost 20,000 books. You can browse publications by subject or title

Joanna Briggs Institute is an international research organization that produces the JBI database of evidence summaries, systematic reviews, and other documents to support evidence-based practice in nursing and allied health care

Cochrane Systematic Reviews are produced by the Cochrane Collaboration, a highly respected international research group that promotes evidence-based practice in all medical specialties

UpToDate offers synoptic, evidence-based information for fast, convenient use at the point of care. Participating clinicians and physicians review the available literature, latest evidence, and provide care recommendations

OT Search is a bibliographic database covering the literature of occupational therapy and related subject areas, such as rehabilitation, education, psychiatry or psychology, and health care delivery or administration. The full text of the indexed resources is NOT in this database, just the bibliographic information to identify the material and the author's abstract when one exists

OTSeeker a free site that contains abstracts of systematic reviews and RCTs relevant to occupational therapy. Studies have been critically appraised and rated from 1 to 10 for quality, validity and interpretability using the PEDro rating scale

PEDro refers to the Physiotherapy Evidence Database that provides physiotherapists and others rapid access to bibliographic details and abstracts of randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews in physiotherapy. It contains many trials of relevance to occupational therapy

Health and Psychosocial Instruments identifies tests, questionnaires, and rating scales in health and psychosocial sciences

National Library of Medicine provides access to hundreds of databases covering a wide range of biomedical information resources

e-Journals

Journals published by the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) can be accessed from the OT web page and are also available in full text in NSUJournals@Ovid. Databases that contain most of the OT journals are CINAHL Complete, NSUJournals@Ovid, and Science Direct ,

e-Books

R2 Digital Library contains full text of medical, nursing, and allied health books from the current Doody’s Core Titles in the Health Sciences

Books@Ovid contains full text of health sciences books published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins and other leading publishers such as American Nurses Association, Oxford University Press, Joanna Briggs Institute, Jones-Bartlett, and Springer Publishing

ClinicalKey contains full text of over 1,000 Elsevier books in all medical specialties

Access Medicine contains full text of leading medical and health sciences books from the McGraw-Hill clinical library as well as textbooks and handbooks from the Lange educational library in both basic and clinical sciences

ClinicalKey , UpToDate , and Access Medicine contain full text drug monographs for the health care professional and the patient of all FDA approved drugs. You can search by generic or brand name, indications, or contraindications and access handy tools, calculators, and tables

Consumer Health

MEDLINEPlus is the National Institutes of Health’s web site for patients and families. It is produced by the National Library of Medicine and contains information about diseases, conditions, and wellness issues. Information is comprehensive, well-written, current, reliable, and features links to videos, medical research, and clinical trials. It is the most widely used consumer information resource in major hospitals and health care centers

ClinicalKey is produced by Elsevier and includes patient education handouts that are clearly written and illustrated, current, and peer reviewed by health care experts

Joanna Briggs Institute provides evidence-based consumer information sheets for patients that are easy to read

Access Medicine provides comprehensive patient education materials in pdf format for adults and children. Includes separate handouts for common conditions and drugs and mediciness

John Vaughan Library – NSU Tahlequah

Comprehensive print and electronic collections in occupational therapy and all areas of the health sciences are provided and updated continuously. Books are located on the third floor near the office of the OT Librarian. Bound (print) journals are located on the second floor in the area directly below the location of the books on the third floor. The OT Librarian is available anytime during office hours on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and at other times by appointment, including evenings.

During regular academic periods, the John Vaughan library is open until 12:00 a.m., Sunday through Thursday. Consult Library Hours for the most current information. Comfortable study areas and wireless access are available throughout the building. Desktop computers, printers, and scanners are located on the first and second floors. Laptops, iPads, and cameras can be checked out at the first floor Information Desk. Wi-Fi hot spots are located throughout the building. Locations of service desks and collections are as follows:

  • 1stFloor. Information Desk, Reserves, Circulation, Audiovisuals, Interlibrary Loan, Scanners, Printers, Photocopier, Computers, and Computer Labs
  • 2d Floor. Journals, Newspapers, Administration, Special Collections, Scanners, Printers, Computers
  • 3d Floor. Books, Government Documents, OT Librarian

Please do not hesitate to get in touch for help with database searches. Searching online databases can be challenging and is a lifelong learning skill. The tutorials provide guidelines to get you started, but they cannot cover every search question that may arise. If you have problems finding articles on your topic or retrieving articles you locate, please contact me by email or by phone. If you use email, it is helpful to enter “OT” in the subject line so I will notice your message right away. The following library resources and services are also available to help you:

  • Remote Access You will have access to databases and online articles as well as other library resources and services 24/7. When you use a computer from home or any remote location, you must enter your NT-NSU user ID and password to gain access to the library’s databases
  • NSU Libraries Collections The library’s online catalog provides access to the books, audiovisuals, journal titles, government publications and other documents contained in the collections at the three NSU libraries
  • Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery . If you need an article that is not available in one of the online databases but is available in the library’s print collection, the article can be copied for you or provided to you electronically. There is no charge to for this service. If you need an article or book that is not available either electronically or in the library’s print collection, they can be ordered from another library at no charge to you. Click on the “Interlibrary Loan” button from the OT web page to complete the online forms that are necessary to request ILL services. Please indicate on your profile that you are an “OT student” and provide complete email and telephone contact information
