Library Exercise for College Strategies Course

 

  1. Log in to the NSU campus network from one of the NSU computers in a lab or in the library using your user id and password. Initiate Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. Type the library URL into the Address box.

  2. If the default URL for Internet Explorer is the NSU homepage, you can get to the library through the library link. It is in the second to the last circle on the right side of the page.
  3. From this page you will be searching five databases—NetLibrary, Ebrary, Ebsco Academic Premier, Wilson Omnifile and Google.
  4. First search the journal databases—Ebsco Academic Premier and Wilson Omnifile. Type the following search term into the Keyword Quick Search box.
  5. “college costs”

  6. Take the check mark out of the All Resources box and put check marks in the Ebsco Academic Premier, and Wilson Omnifile boxes. Click the Search button.
  7. It may take a few minutes for the search engine to return results. When it does, select one article from each of the databases you searched and fill out the corresponding questionnaire below.
  8. For the article from Ebsco Academic Premier answer the following.
  9. Who is [are] the author[s]?

    How many pages is the article?

    What is the name of the journal or periodical?

    When was the article published? (The date of the issue.)

  10. For the article from Wilson Omnifile article answer the following.
  11. Who is [are] the author[s]?

    How many pages is the article?

    What is the name of the journal or periodical?

    When was the article published? (The date of the issue.)

  12. Next, search the e-book databases—NetLibrary and Ebrary. Type the following search term into the Keyword Quick Search box.
  13. psychology

  14. Take the check mark out of the All Resources box and put check marks in the NetLibrary and Ebrary boxes or put a check mark in the Full-Text E-Books box. Click the Search button.
  15. It may again take a few minutes for the search engine to return results. When it does, select one book from each of the databases you searched and fill out the corresponding questionnaire below.
  16. For the book from NetLibrary answer the following.
  17. Who is [are] the author[s]?

    What is the first chapter?

    What is the name of the publisher?

    When was the book published? (The year of publication.)

  18. For the book from Ebrary answer the following.
  19. Who is [are] the author[s]?

    What is the first chapter?

    What is the name of the publisher?

    When was the book published? (The year of publication.)

  20. Finally, search the Internet using Google. For this search you will not be using the Keyword Quick Search box. Go instead to the Google search screen by clicking on the link to Google that is at the bottom of the John Vaughan Library home page. Type in the following search term.
  21. “college costs”

  22. Click the Search button.
  23. When Google returns a results screen, select one web site from the list and fill out the corresponding questionnaire below.

What is the URL of the site you have selected?

What type of site is it? (i.e. .gov, .org, .edu, .com)

Who published the site? (i.e. the person or organization responsible for the site)

Do you think the information at the site would be appropriate for use in a paper? Why or why not?
